home away, 2009
Here’s the same diner but a version I haven’t posted here before. To go with it, a little story:
“One morning on our trip, I took one of the best photos I’ve ever taken in my life. I finally figured out all the math stuff, thanks to this website Teter sent me, and I worked it out in my head, see, and used my knee as a tripod, and exposed it just right, and no one knew they were being photographed, and it came out exactly as I hoped.
This is not that photo.
Instead, I left that photo at the little diner where I took it, because the little diner was one of the best places we went to during the whole trip. You know we saw some good stuff this week, so that’s saying something. And given how nice they were, and how homey it was, and how excited the girl at the counter was to learn about Polaroid, and how we went back both days we were there, it felt right to leave a piece of myself there. I almost never give shots away, so you know this was big. This trip, man. I tell you.
I took another shot, for myself. Same kids, still coloring, no longer ordering from the waitress but sitting as she rushes by. Might not be as perfect, but I think I learned a little something about perfect in 2008, and I made peace with letting the other shot go.
If you ever find yourself in Trinidad, California, go to the Trinidad Bay Eatery. Like, every day.”
