“You can’t make this stuff up, folks,” Part II: The KFC Edition
Look closely at the KFC Bucket of Hope. Very closely. Are you looking very closely at the KFC Bucket of Hope?
Okay. Do you see it?
The frontmost piece of fried chicken is a breast.
It is a breast.

I know this is going to make me hopelessly uncool but I can’t help it.
It saddens me that not one person stopped and said “ha ha chicken boobie in the bucket! Woah, wait a minute. What the hell, KFC AND KOMEN???”
Because one does wonder what the Komen Foundation was thinking. Besides the huge amount of money they’ll raise, of course. Ah, money.
Then there’s KFC. The very same week KFC - struggling to keep its market share - releases the gut-busting (hi obesity epidemic discussioneers!), artery clogging, mind-blowingly bad for you Double-Down, they also show up with this campaign? Talk about timing!
Come on! You are some of the smartest people I know. Just this week I had a great conversation about personal choice and food and obesity with some of you (thanks indefensible), and the posts I read but didn’t respond to were wonderful (looking at jimray). So many people talk about caring about causes, about providing healthier food choices for people no matter where they are, about changing options and perceptions. Here’s a prime example to discuss it. Ok, we can giggle - but then can we talk about it? What IS this?
Hi, we’re KFC. We don’t give actually give a damn about your health, except when we’re pretending to so it makes us look good.
or is it
Hi, we’re KFC. Feel free to make all the shitty choices you want. At least you can justify them by supporting a good cause while you make ‘em!
or is it
It doesn’t matter where the money for your cause comes from. It just matters that you get it.
It’s obviously more complicated than I’m making it out to be, and you can read this article and the comments for more, better thoughts on this campaign. Someone from KFC joins in, and there are a lot of people discussing health, food, choices, money raising, causes, etc. But seriously - someone chime in!
